Our overseas externship student, Holly MacPhee

Earlier this year we had the pleasure of hosting Holly MacPhee, a final year optometry student from the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences at the University of Waterloo in Canada, for an 8 week student residency at our practice.  Holly is from Prince Edward Island – yes, the setting for Anne of Green Gables – in Canada and she previously completed a four month ocular disease rotation in Miami where she expanded her knowledge on the treatment and management of various ocular diseases.  In 2018, Holly travelled to Senegal where she and other student optometrists provided free eye care and glasses to over 2000 Senegalese people in need of these services.

It was an absolute pleasure having Holly at our practice observing our optometrists and also examining patients under the supervision of Andrew, Jillian or myself.  Working with her was a delight and she also had a wonderful manner with our patients.  Holly was very keen to learn and I know that she gained valuable experience working in a specialty contact lens practice like ours, where she was able to examine many different types of contact lens patients including aphakic babies, keratoconics, post-graft patients and high myopes.

Holly has a special interest in contact lenses and traumatic brain injury, and she plans to complete further training in these two sub-specialties after she graduates later this year.  Holly also had such a great time working in our practice and visiting various parts of Australia that in the near future she plans to return to Australia to practice optometry.  We wish all the best for the future and look forward to hopefully seeing her again if she returns to our country.
